Mediterranean blue primitive cross stitch sampler
Unusual early 20th century cross stitch sampler of traditional border patterns in coarse thread on rustic linen– I think it may be of Mediterranean origin. The thread appears to be a coarse, hand-dyed linen and the coloring is uneven blues with a tweedy effect. Stitches are mostly crosses worked over 4 threads, with satin stitches and long, overlapping crosses for the border.
16″ wide by 33″ long with selvedge on the two long sides; the ends are hemmed.
Condition is fairly good with some discoloration and damage along the sides, particularly at the right.
