early 20th century Hardanger sampler SOLD

Very unusual early 20th century Hardanger, hemstitch and drawn thread sampler– age-old techniques with an unexpected modern look. The sampler is worked on fine soft canvas, similar to Congress Cloth, in a neutral brown-paper-bag shade. Stitches are worked in floss and perle cotton. 14″ high by 16″ wide.

Condition is generally very good with some minor damage; a few small scattered holes, two areas of canvas that appear faded or bleached and about 1″ of stitch loss to the coral buttonhole edging at the bottom edge. Edges are finished with buttonhole stitches and/or folded under and hemmed.
