dated 1836 Dutch darning sampler, silk thread on linen
This stunning darning sampler (most likely Dutch) dated 1836, was skillfully worked with fine silk threads on linen. Eight darned motifs (6 crosses, a star and a corner) surround a central urn of flowers and paired baskets, crowns and wreaths with initials. The colors are lovely and the overall effect is very soft and delicate. Date is in the lower corners of the center cartouche. The condition and workmanship are exceptional. The frame is simple and ready to hang, in generally good condition although the corners are loose. 21-1/2″ high by 23″ wide overall.
