circa 1820s alphabet & medallion sampler
Lovely late 19th century unfinished sampler, beautifully stitched with elaborate alphabets at the top and a collection of elaborate floral medallions at the bottom, all worked in fine silk thread. There’s even an unusual alphabet worked on the bias. All the letters and motifs are completely finished, but the largest central section is completely unstitched– you could frame this sampler folded as shown in the first image for the most impact. The stitches are exceptionally fine and even, this is NOT the work of a young schoolgirl!
The linen ground is a fine, almost gauzy weave with a crisp texture in a creamy, light yellowish shade. It has the original woven selvedge on both long sides with a double line of dull red woven in; the top and bottom edges are hemmed. There are scattered small holes throughout, but mostly in the unworked area. No lost stitches.
The sampler measures 12″ wide by 29-1/2″ long. It is unframed and will be shipped rolled in acid free tissue and shipped in a tube for safe arrival.
