circa 1800 sampler with colorful Quaker motifs 17-1/2″ by 16-1/4″
$495.00
Circa 1800 sampler with numerous colorful Quaker-style motifs worked in fine wool thread on medium brown linen fabric. Colors used range from deep reds and blues to a pretty turquoise, a coral and an olive green. 17-1/2″ high by 16-1/4″ wide. Motifs are an interesting assortment of classic geometric shapes, both whole and half plus floral motifs as well as both geometric and floral borders. No name or date but a slip of paper that accompanied the sampler reads “An old Russell sampler worked by an old ancestor Sarah Pim 1734.”
The fabric is in generally good condition and is still supple and flexible, although there are numerous small holes and worn spots plus small tears along the top edge. The edges have some stiffness in spots indicating the sampler was likely glued to a mounting board at some time. There are 3 or 4 visible water stains. There are some areas of stitch loss and other areas appear to be unfinished.
The sampler is unframed and will be shipped rolled in acid free paper. A signature will be required at delivery.
