circa 1750 Albany darning pattern sampler

$1,295.00

Unusual circa 1750 sampler of darning patterns worked in polychrome silks on fine gauze-like linen fabric. These patterns are typical of Dutch samplers, however, and were likely worked prior to the American Revolution while Albany New York was still very influenced by Dutch customs.

The inscription at the bottom reads Elizabeth Grahams Work Albany October 11 Anno Domini 1–0, with the date partially missing. The silk threads still show a wide variety of colors although they have softened with age and are now muted. The first two images are truest for color; the closeup images are scans and while they are darker than the sampler actually is they show the details better.

The sampler is in fair condition overall with losses to the ground fabric particularly along the top edge and left side. Three sides are neatly hemmed with the fourth the original fabric selvedge. Scattered holes throughout and damage along what are likely fold lines from top to bottom and from side to side (although these are not as noticeable). The frame is modern and the appearance of the sampler would be greatly enhanced by proper mounting on a similar fabric. Not examined out of the frame. I am willing to remove the glass and frame to reduce the cost of packing and shipping, since they are quite heavy.

The sampler measures about 10″ wide by 12-1/2″ high in a 16″ by 18″ modern wooden frame. The frame is in good condition and ready to hang.
