c1900 “BS” German or Dutch miniature red & blue darning sampler
Darning was an essential household skill for mending clothing and bed or table linens, and part of every girl’s needlework education in the 19th and early 20th century. This small sampler is most likely German or Dutch, dating to the period between 1890-1910 and beautifully stitched (the reverse is shown in the last photo). Bright red and royal blue threads were used on a creamy off-white linen. The edges are finished with a hemstitch openwork border.
In excellent condition with only a small brown spot on the reverse, near the edge, which is not visible from the front. The sampler measures 7-5/8″ wide by 7-3/8″ high. It is unframed and will be shipped flat.
