c1900 bead embroidery “Whimsey” pincushion
Unusually nice Iroquois beadwork embroidery from around 1900, perhaps slightly earlier– the beads are quite small. closer to a modern 13/0 instead of the more typical 10/0 used for these “Whimsies’ made for the tourist trade. All the beads are clear, colorless glass except for the very large cylinder beads in the center of each circular motifs. The fabric is a red wool twill edged with blue cotton and backed with a tan polished cotton.
Measures about 5-1/2″ across at the widest point and nearly 1-1/2” high. The beaded fringe edging is still intact.
In excellent condition with no missing beads or moth nibbles, only very light soiling of the ground fabric. There are a couple pinpoint holes along the edge in the blue fabric and a single discolored spot on the red fabric and on the back that may be residue from a price sticker.
