c1890 intricately carved vegetable ivory thread “waxer”

This diminutive object was intricately carved from Coquille nut or “vegetable ivory,” which is actually the fruit of a Brazilian palm tree. A “waxer” was (and still is) used to coat thread for use with beads or metal threads. It’s polished to a high luster and has a lovelypatina.

The condition is excellent with no chips or dings, no cracks and still has some of the original wax. It measures about 1-1/8″ across and 3/4″ thick.
