c1880 “Flectschule” German teacher’s paper weaving patterns book
Circa 1880 German teacher’s handmade book of paper weaving patterns, made from narrow strips of shiny black and white paper. This technique has long been a popular traditional craft for children but some extraordinary examples were made by school teachers.
This hardcover book measures about 6″ by 8-1/2″ closed. The 26 plates or pages are presented in “Leporello” or accordian format, measuring nearly 12 feet in all when unfolded. Most plates contain two or three different patterns. The papers are deep chocolate brown and off-white with occasional accents of a deeper beige.
In excellent condition overall; 2 plates have a few loose paper strips with minor damage.
