c1875 carved bone umbrella needle case w/ crochet hook & stanhope SOLD
This elaborate 19th century bone umbrella-form needle case is topped with a Stanhope viewer held in a closed hand and featuring a crochet hook on the opposite end. The needle case is carved from light bone (cow or ox) with drilled holes in a lacy pattern; the color has more of a golden tone than most of the other bone items in my collection. Inside the closed hand is a Stanhope viewer with a nine-panel image of Montserrat.
The condition is very good; the only minor flaws I see are pin-point chips at the tops of a few of the crenellated arches at the top of the umbrella. The threaded screw closure still works smoothly. Circa 1875. 4-3/4″ long overall.
