c1830 Mexican figural sampler with animals & grape clusters

Mexican samplers are most typically horizontal rectangles or large squares, so the vertical, almost band sampler style of this circa 1830 embroidery is quite unusual. It’s worked on fine cream evenweave linen fabric (slightly darkened with age) with very shiny filament silk threads in a variety of counted stitches: cross, satin, eyelet, backstitch and long-legged cross. The sampler measures 15″ wide by 33″ high. The silks are still a range of vivid pastel shades, slightly faded as compared to the reverse. The stitching is skillfully executed with an exceptionally neat back. The sides are neatly hemmed and the top and bottom edges are fabric selvedge.

The overall condition is quite good. There are several small holes in the ground fabric, most likely from having been stored folded, and a few loose silk threads. The holes would be almost unnoticeable if the sampler were mounted on a matching fabric. One corner has two dark stains near the edge.

This sampler is unframed and will be shipped rolled in acid-free paper in a sturdy tube.  A signature will be required at delivery.  Shipping within the USA is included in the price, and will be billed separately for overseas customers.
