c1825 German sampler with religious motifs, alphabets, birds & butterflies

Circa 1825, this German sampler features classic motifs in the Biedermeier style, including a flower-draped cross and anchor, butterflies, houses, a large parrot and even a very large lobster or crayfish! The silks are still vibrant and the amount of detail packed into this small piece is fascinating.

While the overall effect is striking, the condition is unfortunately poor. The sampler has been backed with a plain linen that minimizes the numerous holes in the fabric and has stabilized the raveling edges. The central motif has been tacked together with several large stitches and the needlework is slightly bunched up around them; there are also several areas where darning repairs have been attempted with a coral-colored thread.
