c1820s carved mother of pearl handled scissors with lions
A stunning early 19th century French small steel blade embroidery scissors with elaborately carved mother of pearl handles; a lion sits atop each finger ring with floral and leaf motifs. 4 inches in length, with 1-1/2 inch long blades and the handles are about 1-3/4 inches long. Please view the closeup photos to see the intricate details. The caps above the handles are brass with intricate detailing and resemble thimbles in style and shape. This was likely part of a complete set of accessories in an ornate presentation box produced for sale at the Palais Royale in the early 1800s.
There is a very old repair to one of the lions above the finger ring: 2 very small (about the diameter of a tapestry needle) steel pins were used to reattach a clean break in the mother of pearl. You can see the horizontal line through the lion, but other than the pin dots, it’s hardly noticeable in real life (the photos are greatly enlarged). No other signs of damage and the blades are still sharp.
Condition is very good, and while sturdy enough to snip the occasional thread, at nearly 200 years old this is not a tool intended for everyday use! A signature will be required at delivery.
