c1820 German Spot Motifs horizontal sampler
$395.00
Circa 1820 German “spot” sampler with scattered motifs is in an unusual horizontal format although it could be hung vertically instead. Motifs include a 2″ tall man with a long gun, a saddled horse, flowers and repeating geometric patterns. Polychrome silk thread were used on a fine linen ground fabric of a neutral golden beige shade.
Condition is generally good. Silk thread colors have faded slightly to appear more neutral although the pretty brick red silk is still vibrant. No thread or stitch loss, no holes or loss to the ground fabric, and although there are multiple brownish stains on the fabric the silk colors appear to be fast. There are some minor marks on the dark green paper mat under the glass. The back is old card board with discolorations held in place with small nails and it does not have a dust cover.
The sampler frame measures 12″ by 23-1/2″ and could be displayed either vertically or horizontally; the sight area of the embroidery is 7″ by 19″. I suspect there is more embroidery hidden, as some motifs are slightly covered so it would benefit from a new mat. A signature will be required at delivery.
