c1800 7 year old Marietta Costantino’s scenic sampler SOLD
$895.00
Unusual Mediterranean-region sampler dating from around 1800 on very fine, gauze-like linen with silk threads, worked by a 7 year old girl! A fantastic array of motifs: scenic hills, a Montgolfier balloon, horse, black cockerel, a tower, tiny black dogs and a cat plus an aproned woman balancing a basket of fruit on her head. The inscription at bottom reads “Marietta Costantino e bracco di anni VII.”
Overall frame size is 13″ by 17″ with the sampler sight area measuring 9-1/4″ by 13″.
Condition is generally good with some loss of the ground fabric around the outer edges, although I do not see any stitch loss. Color retention of the silk is quite good. The frame appears to be original and made from heavily lacquered wood with veneer loss and a missing decorative metal medallion in one corner. The wooden trim inside the frame is somewhat loose but the frame is sturdy enough to hang. Not examined out of the frame.
Insurance is included in the price. A signature will be required at delivery.
