c1700 Frisian alphabet sampler
$1,095.00
Frisian alphabet sampler dating from around 1700 in exceptional condition. Samplers from Friesland (in the northwest part of the Netherlands) are characterized by elaborate alphabets and tree of life or floral motifs. The sampler also features pierced and crowned hearts and birds- motifs typical of samplers from other regions of the Netherlands as well. The two very large letters near the center bottom of the sampler are likely those of the maker. 13-1/2″ high by 19″ long.
Fine silk thread stitches on very fine linen fabric; good color retention in the silk threads especially the raspberry-red and pretty blue-green shades. The linen threads are also quite fine but in the closeup photos you can see the homespun woven texture.
In exceptional condition for over 300 years old. Two tiny pinhead-sized holes in the ground fabric, a few tiny pulled threads along the outer edge where they were caught by the frame nails, a few small rust spots (one slightly larger is shown in the closeups). No stitch loss.
Insurance is included in the price. A signature will be required at delivery.
