Art Deco sterling & coral sewing set by Black Starr Frost Jewelers NYC
Stunning completely original Art Deco set of sterling silver sewing tools from celebrated NYC jewelers Black, Starr & Frost (yes, the same place that sells diamonds the size of ice cubes). This set dates from the 1st quarter of the 20th century.
The ornately engraved thimble is set with genuine coral cabochons; it’s small and the size is not marked but probably about a size 8. The sleek scissors have German-made steel blades (probably Solingen) which are sharp to the tips and are set into handles marked “Sterling.” The scissors measure about 3-3/4″ long. The awl or stiletto has a steel tip set into a sterling handle, the ribbon threader, bodkin and bullet-form needle case are unmarked but test as sterling.
All the tools are in excellent condition; the only flaw I can find is a small discolored area on the steel base of the awl. The box is worn on the outside and the velvet lining has some discoloration caused by tarnish on the tools over time.
