19th century Victorian spot motif and Bargello sampler

This unusual English “spot” or motif sampler includes Bargello (or flamestitch) and “canvas lace” patterns in addition to the typical birds (including an owl!), crowns, flowering baskets and a tiny red lion. No name or date. Worked with silk and fine wool on brown linen. These samplers were collections of motifs and patterns for reference or future projects and not intended for display.

The condition is excellent without stains or holes. No stitch loss except for one small spot in the top border. The threads are unfaded and very vibrant. it is hemmed on three sides with selvedge on the right edge.

The sampler measures 12-1/2″ wide by 16-1/4″ high. It is unframed and will be shipped rolled in acid-free paper in a tube.  A signature will be required at delivery.  Shipping within the USA is included in the price, and will be billed separately for overseas customers.
