19th century Victorian large shell pincushion on elaborate base

$32.00

Shell-inspired sewing accessories were popular travel souvenirs during the second half of the 19th century. This one is a large natural conch shell about 8″ high by 7″ long with a fabric pincushion styled to look like a sea sponge. The elaborate foliate-style cast metal base has a nice patina. “Souvenir of Danville” (PA) is written in lovely copperplate script along the body. In excellent condition, the writing has worn away slightly.
