19th century large vegetable ivory thimble or thread holder

$78.00

Antique ornately carved etui made from Coquille nut or “vegetable ivory” (the seed of a palm tree), dating from the second half of the 19th century. This would have easily held a thimble or a small stacked multi-spool device (to hold silk threads) or even both. 2-5/8″ high by 1-5/8″ across.

The exterior of the acorn case is in excellent condition overall with two areas of minor damage– there is a black spot on one end, possibly an ink stain, and some chipping in the fine, feathery swirl carving at the other end. The chips are small enough to not be immediately noticeable and are almost easier to feel than see. The screw closure is snug and secure.
