19th century acorn form carved pierced vinaigrette or thimble holder

$72.00

An intricately carved and pierced acorn-shaped vinaigrette or scent caddy, circa 1890, probably from England. Of course, a needleworker sees this and and thinks thimble case, and I often find thimbles in them, but they originally held a refreshing scented cloth or potpourri mix. I believe that the material is coquilla nut but it might be wood. It has a screw threaded closure which tightens snugly.

Excellent condition with crisp detailing in the carving, a few fine, stable hairline cracks at the base. It measures approximately 2-1/2 inches high by 1-1/2 inches across at the widest part.
