1950s teddy bears hand embroidered & applique baby quilt
$135.00
Utterly charming vintage handmade baby quilt from the 1950s in new, unused condition– this is quite a find and in pristine condition! Other than the main fabric panels which are machine sewn, it’s completely hand-stitched– quilting, appliques and embroidery, even the yellow binding is sewn to the back with tiny, neat hand stitches. Embroidery stitches were worked in cotton floss. The bears’ bodies are appliqued with solid color fabric while their hats are printed fabric; the appliques were attached with buttonhole stitches. Quilting stitches average 6-7 per inch. The body of the quilt is completely covered in diamond and circle patterns with scallops in the yellow border.
The colors are clear and bright, the smooth cotton fabric of the top is white with a backing of the palest possible pink and light yellow along the edges. The central yellow bear measures about 11″ high.
The quilt is very lightweight with little or no batting (sometimes called “summer weight”) and measures 36-1/2″ wide by 53″ high. It’s in exceptional condition, clean and bright – I’m convinced it was never used– and has been washed by hand.
