1878 Mabel Adams alphabets & numbers sampler
A small counted cross stitch sampler circa 1878 from England; Mabel Adams stitched her letters and numbers onto a Hardanger-like linen evenweave fabric with coarse thread. The needlework measures about 7-1/2″ wide by 8″ high, with the frame making the overall size 8-1/4″ by 8-3/4.”
The sampler is in good condition and free of holes or missing stitches, although it would benefit from proper mounting to eliminate the surface wrinkling. The frame is age-appropriate and in good condition, ready to hang and display. The photo shows some areas of glare or a pinkish reflection on the glass which are not on the sampler itself.
On the back of the frame is a hand-written note: “This was embroidered by Lesley and Jan Wedways(?) great grandmother in the year roughly 1888 (a 7 is superimposed over the second 8). She would be about 10 years old. Mabel Adamas Mabel Louise Saunders”
Charming small samplers like this are hard to find, and a perfect way to begin a collection. SOLD
