1884 reprint of Joh. Sibmacher’s 1604 book of charted patterns

Johan Sibmacher’s 1604 “Kreuzstich-Muster” or needlework pattern book contains classic charted designs used by embroiderers and sampler makers for centuries. This is a 1884 German reprint of the original book, containing all 36 pattern plates (pages). 97 patterns are charted on graph paper.

Hardcover book measuring 6-3/4″ by 8-1/4″ with 37 pages. In fair condition: cover has slight edge wear and light soiling, with a 1/2″ tear at the bottom of the spine. The pages are good, the paper is still supple and not at all brittle although it is quite tanned– the color is a warm golden tan, darker than it appears in the photos. Binding is still sturdy, BUT there are numerous flaws: the title page is missing (I can include a printed copy), hinges are cracking, the first two pages have 1′ long tears at the bottom margin (does not affect the print area) and the final 8 pages have come loose as an intact group (pages are folded, sewn together in groups called “leaves” and then bound together. A rare opportunity to own a piece of antique needlework history!
