1860s Berlinwork spot sampler with pink ribbon edging
$95.00
19th century Victorian era Berlinwork pattern sampler stitched on fine canvas with wool and silk threads, finished with a pink satin ribbon edging. 38 different patterns and borders, mostly worked in cross stitch with some satin and compound stitches in addition to the Bargello flamestitch. The fine beige cotton canvas has about 25 threads per inch, very similar to modern Congress cloth. Most patterns are geometric, a few florals and there is a classic tassel border motif as well.
This style of sampler was worked as a collection of patterns for reference and future projects and were not intended to be framed or displayed. Many have survived in good condition because they were rolled up and stored away from light, in a drawer!
9-3/4″ wide by 26″ long, bound on all four sides. Condition is very good with minor issues: some loss of wool in a few motifs, most noticeable in the Bargello flamestitch pattern which also has a few small holes in the exposed canvas, and two areas of loss in the ribbon edging.
This sampler is unframed and will be rolled in a protective sleeve and shipped in a tube for safe arrival. A signature will be required at delivery.
