1840s Berlin wool work “spot” or pattern canvas sampler

A classic “Berlin Wool Work” pattern sampler from the 1840s, worked on fine canvas, similar to modern Congress Cloth with wool and silk threads. These were intended as a method of collecting patterns for future use, not as projects to be finished for display. Most patterns are worked in cross stitch with some satin stitches and a section of Bargello (flamestitch). The edges are bound with silk ribbon in a pinky-beige color.

Condition is generally good with some stitch loss to the wool. On the lower right side the area of bargello has lost most of the stitching and the canvas has a few holes, and a 2″ section of the edging has worn away.

The sampler measures 9-3/4″ wide by 26″ high. It is unframed and will be shipped rolled in acid-free paper in a tube.  A signature will be required at delivery.
