1837 “HOS” Dutch or German spot motif sampler
$315.00
1837 German or Dutch spot motif sampler worked in the style of 40 years earlier. Two floral wreaths surround the letters HOS/CHS and EN/AHC, with other scattered initial groupings among the motifs. Classic alphabets create the top rows worked in cross stitch, four-sided stitch and pulled square eyelets, with sawtooth borders of satin stitches. Motifs includes pears, flowers, birds, crowns and a tree of knowledge with Adam and Eve figures at the base in 18th century costume; many are worked over a single fabric thread for added detail. Adam wears knee breeches with a wide sash and carries a shovel! Silk thread on linen.
The sampler is in good condition although the silk thread colors have faded so that the overall effect is very monochromatic. There are a few scattered dark stains on the linen ground. No thread loss.
13-3/4″ wide by 12-1/2″ high in a mid-20th century black frame with glass, ready to hang. Frame has areas of wear and the corners are slightly loose. It will be carefully wrapped and shipped in a box to ensure safe arrival. A signature will be required at delivery.
