1830s Hannah Hetherington aged 16 sampler

Hannah Hetherington was 16 years old when she worked her sampler in the 1830s. It’s a classic style with two rows of alphabets at the top and symmetrical motifs below; in the bottom row she abandoned symmetry for a variety of flowering baskets. Hearts and small animals are scattered throughout. The linen ground is a warm golden brown and the silks are rich, muted earth tones and a soft blue-green.

The condition is generally very good with a dime-sized hole at the lower right corner and a few worn areas. It’s hemmed at top and bottom with selvedge on both sides. There is a 2″ worn area at the bottom center hem, and some paper residue along the edges where it was glued down at some point. No stitch loss. The silk thread colors appear the same front and back, so they don’t seem to have faded, although I suspect the linen has darkened with time.

The sampler measures 18″ wide by 13″ high. It is unframed and will be shipped rolled in acid-free paper in a tube.  A signature will be required at delivery.  Shipping within the USA is included in the price, and will be billed separately for overseas customers.
