1830s Berlin Work needlepoint panel with animals & floral motif in the Biedermeier style

$325.00

A large tapestry panel of needlepoint on fine canvas with remarkably detailed motifs in classic Biedermeier style, dating from the 1830s. The motifs are typical of the era, floral motifs, birds, small scenes and an extraordinary crouching leopard, worked in fine wool yarn. The canvas is very soft and the yarn colors have faded and mellowed, so the overall effect is muted.

There is little to no stitch loss although some motifs have areas that appear unfinished. There is damage to the upper edges of the canvas ground, which proper mounting on a similar backing would make much less apparent. There are scattered stains to the canvas ground, and a few sticky spots on the back where the sampler had been glued or taped down at some point in its history.

The overall dimensions are 16″ wide by 26″ long. The canvas is hemmed along the bottom edge with raw, cut edges on the remaining three sides.
