1824 Mexican sampler with flamestitch & beadwork by Manuela Abyla
Dated 1824 sampler by Manuela Abyla with bands of decorative borders, elaborate panels of flamestitch and solidly stitched areas of counted glass beadwork. Silk threads on fine linen.
Condition is generally good, although the sampler has not been examined out of the frame. No stitch loss, but there are scattered small holes and mends to the ground fabric. Quite large at 15-1/2″ by 29-1/2″ frame.
The modern frame has a grain-painted finish with minor spots of wear with a spot that may have sticker residue on it, but it is sturdy and ready to hang. The sampler is sandwiched between two panels of plexiglass so both sides of the embroidery are visible. The frame is wired to be hung vertically with the name positioned horizontally at the bottom.
