1819 “DW” German spot sampler silk thread religious motifs borders alphabets
German sampler dated 1819 with the initials “DW” and “AH” in a central cartouche along with the date. Very fine linen fabric with tiny silk stitches, mostly cross stitches but there is a wonderful square of satin stitches combined with chain stitches. The red vertical line down the center of the sampler is red thread woven into the linen. The backing fabric is a little darker than it appears in the closeup photos. There is a wonderful variety of borders and motifs– flowers and leafy borders, religious and cottage scenes, alphabets and geometric pattern squares.
Condition is generally good. While there is some damage along the edges and scattered small holes to the ground fabric, the fabric is sturdy and supple, not at all brittle. The silk threads have retained their colors nicely and there is no thread loss. The sampler measures 10-1/4″ wide by 11-1/4″ high. It is unframed and will be shipped rolled in acid-free paper in a tube. Shipping is included in the price. A signature will be required at delivery.
