1780 Cherubs & Crowns sampler

Small dated 1780 European (probably German) sampler with cherubs, crowns and an array of animals across the lower edge– birds, a rooster, a white swan, a rabbit and a stag among them.

It measures 12-1/2″ wide by 5″ high, and is unframed with the original colored woven selvedge on two sides with cut edges along the top and bottom. Condition is fair with extensive damage along the edges and a few small holes in the ground fabric. Color retention of the silk is good with a nice assortment of pastel tones. The linen is slightly darker than it appears in the photos. Conservation mounting on a similar fabric will lessen the impact of the damaged areas. I’m happy to take additional photos on request.

A charming example of needlework history. A signature will be required for delivery and insurance is included in the price.
