1776 Mary Marshal “Friendship” sampler

$625.00

Unusual English spot sampler by 14 year old Mary Marshal, 12″ by 14″ worked with silk threads on fine linen fabric. Under the alphabet rows the text reads “Mary Marshal her sampler 1776 ag(e) 14.” Below the motifs is another name ” Mary Ann Moore” and “May The Wing of Friendship Never Lose a Feather Let Not…” Numerous bird motifs, 2 floral sprays worked in surface embroidery, the rest all cross stitch in pretty colors. The linen is an unusal greyish-tan shade.

Condition of the sampler is generally good with very little stitch loss but there are numerous small holes and worn spots to the ground fabric. Color retention of the silk is good as compared to the reverse of the sampler.

This will require a signature at delivery and insurance is included in the price.
