1725 German band sampler with man and house
$1,495.00
Mid-18th century German band sampler with a date that may be 1725 (the last two numbers are difficult to decipher). Row after row of alphabets, numbers (some tone-on-tone) and motifs, including all the classics: a pelican plucking its breast to feed its young, the Spies of Canaan carrying grapes, a very large man in period clothing and scattered crowns of varying sizes. The large house near the bottom is unfinished.
8-1/2 inches wide by 44 inches long on fine linen ground fabric and worked with silk threads.
Condition: the fabric has darkened and has several areas of discoloration and some stains. The only stitch loss I see is in the black-brown motifs such as the two horses in the lower third. A few weak areas in fabric but no holes. There are spots of damage along the edges likely from previous framing and there are crusty spots of old dried glue affected some parts of the side and bottom hems but those are less than 1/16″ wide. The sampler is hemmed along the sides and has the original selvedge top and bottom. Colors have faded somewhat but the pretty blue-green is still colorful.
This will be shipped loosely folded and in a box. A signature will be required at delivery.
