1710 Mary Weare English band sampler
$1,495.00
A classic English band sampler by Mary Weare dated 1710 in a gorgeous antique solid wood frame. “Band” samplers are narrow and long with rows of different patterns, usually kines of alphabets and sometimes text– this one has it all! Fine wool thread on very fine count linen fabric.
The top row reads MARY WEARE 1710. Below that are several rows of alphabets and then (dashes indicate illegible letters): THIS SAMPLER WAS | MADE IN THE YEAR (1710) | —MARY— | –WIFE • MY PARENTS | ARE VP ON * — | THE ROSE IS RED AND | THE LORD IS GREET
The lower half is rows of borders, mostly blackwork patterns.
Sight area of the sampler measures 6-1/2″ by 21-1/4″ with the frame measuring 11-1/4″ by 26″ with a 1-1/4″ thick frame (making the piece quite heavy). The frame is very good condition with lovely grain and is ready to hang, the gold filet has some chips to the gesso and gilding. The sampler mount is slightly loose in the frame (likely because the wood of the frame has expanded over the years) but still secure. On the back is a label from a framer and restorer in Bath England with a date of 1966.
Condition of the sampler is generally very good with some stitch loss to the wool. One small stain on the right of the 4th row and a small discolored hole before GREET (GREAT).
This will require a signature at delivery and insurance is included in the price.
