3 volume set of “Wir erfinden Stickereien” (We Create Embroideries) is the title of a classic teaching series by Monika and Albert Leist, published as part of the Wachsen und Reifen (Growth and Maturation) series. These books demonstrate the fundamentals for creating original, creative embroidery work (such as cross-stitch or Holbein stitch).
The goal is not just to rigidly copy given patterns, but to understand embroidery as a creative design process.
- Volumes 1 & 2: Focus on cross-stitch. They teach step-by-step how to design your own geometric and floral shapes.
- Volume 3: Introduction to Holbein stitch, other decorative stitches, as well as drawn thread work and hemstitch
Hard to find the complete set. These are in very good condition and appear unused with very tight bindings. German language text throughout. Many charted patterns photographed closely enough to work from.
