c1850 Victorian beaded needlepoint on perforated paper

$425.00

Unusual mid-19th century glass beaded needlepoint on brown perforated paper, accented with chenille embroidery and glass pearls. Most of the castle-like towers and hanging pennants or flags are solidly beaded with some background areas of white silk needlepoint. The floral spray motif features natural shaped glass beads so luminous I thought they were mother of pearl at first look, and chenille embroidered flowers and stems. The paper backing is a lighter brown than modern perforated paper and a finer count, closer to 18 holes per inch.

The beadwork has retained its vibrant colors, the chenille threads ave faded from their original bright corals and green (as you can see on the photos of the reverse). The perforated paper is slightly darker than it appears in the photos and has edge damage including creases, small tears and staining. The overall size of the paper is 8-1/2″ wide by 9-1/2″ high with the stitched area 7-3/4″ wide by 8-1/4″ high.No damage to the beads or embroidery, some small stained areas with the stitched portion.
